My fingers tapped against my leg, the tension rising in my spine as we drove through the city. Weeks, we’d been questioning people. Dragging addicts, informants, anyone who might know what Carmine was doing back to the warehouse. And still, we had nothing.

He’d been surprisingly quiet since his attack on Mila. I didn’t like it. I felt itchy and restless as we waited for everything to come together.

Our plan to have Cole’s assassin friends take out my father was delayed as they finished another job. I wanted them in place before we moved on Carmine. A coordinated attack on both heads of the families was the safest option for everyone. Especially right now when we didn’t know who to trust.

We didn’t know what side Matteo was on. It was clear he hadn’t been in on his sister’s attack. But I didn’t trust his affection for her extended above his loyalty to the family. And Mila didn’t want to risk his life if Carmine found out he’d helped us. The longer we waited, the higher the risk of exposure.

“You’re worried,” Mila said as she slid across the seat closer to me. Her fingers brushed the hair back from my face. Her soft touch did more to soothe me than all the torture we’d done today.

Having her with me in the warehouse was the only positive to this situation. I loved watching her work. Loved that we could share this. That neither of us had to hide who we were. And it meant I never had to be away from her.

“I just want it over.” I sighed, pulling her closer so her head rested on my chest. It always seemed like she was never close enough.

If I was holding her hand, I wanted to wrap my arm around her instead. If she was molded to my side, I wanted her naked on top of me. If I was buried inside her sweet cunt I wanted her gaze on me.

It was never enough. I wanted all of her. Wanted to absorb her into my very skin so she could never leave me. So she would always be safe. Happy.

“The longer this goes on, the greater chance he’ll find out.” My fingers stroked through her silky hair as I spoke. “That he’ll come after Alessandra or Kincaid again.”

I didn’t want to say he might come after her. Couldn’t even bear to think it. I knew she could handle herself. That the only reason he’d beaten her last time was because of the shock of who it was.

But the memories were still too fresh. Open wounds on my heart that I didn’t think would ever fully heal.

She turned her head to look at me. My hand fell to the back of her neck with the movement. “For the record, I was against that.”

Her pulse beat hard under my fingers like her heart rate had kicked up. Like she was worried, I wouldn’t believe her.

But I knew those attacks were all Carmine. They were too sick to come from anyone else.
